Esters

Therapeutic Properties

  • Essential oils containing a significant percentage of esters are antispasmodic, ranging from a gentle antispasmodic action to a powerful one, depending on the oil. One particular component, isobutyl angelate (found in Roman Chamomile), is considered by many Aromatherapists to be one of the best antispasmodics available.
  • Oils high in esters have a pronounced sedative effect.
  • Balancing and soothing, they are known as the “balancing components”. Many esters have a significant regulating and rebalancing action on the sympathetic nervous system. Oils high in esters can often be emotionally uplifting.
  • Some are analgesic (Jasmine, Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Ylang Ylang)
  • Some are good digestive aids (Cardamom, Roman Chamomile, Bergamot)
  • Generally anti-inflammatory, and effective on skin rashes and skin irritations.
  • Adaptogenic (helps the body adjust to and deal with stress)
