Plai (North East) - Zingiber cassumunar

On Aromatics International we have 2 Plai essential oils. One is distilled in Central Thailand, the other is distilled in North Eastern Thailand. Based on the specific chemistry of each oil we recommend the one from Central Thailand for reducing pain and inflammation (quite a powerful analgesic) and the Plai from the North East for reducing inflammation and infection (similar to tea tree, and is very effective against colds and flu).

The terpinene-4 ol in plai, tea tree and sweet marjoram is the component credited for much of the anti-infectious behavior of the oil. Plai generally has between 25-45 % terpinene-4 ol in it. We like to combine plai with tea tree and sweet marjoram when dealing with infections.

Personal Experience, Research, Possible Actions

We bought both oils based on the chemistry and aroma of each. We loved them both and decided to use them together in our blends!

Plai is used by Thai Massage Therapists to ease joint and muscle pain. It is an excellent oil to add to blends for reducing inflammation for injury, sprains, muscle and joint issues. Plai is from the same plant family as ginger (Zingiber officinale) but has different properties and more intense actions. Plai does not possess the classic heat that is common to Ginger. Instead Plai has a cooling action on inflamed areas. It is very effective!

The oil is used to relieve pain, for digestive issues such as irritable bowel and nausea, and is also very effective for colds and infection.

Here is what the Thailand distiller told us: Plai essential oil is excellent pain reliever on joints and muscles. The undiluted Plai has been found to ease pain for upwards of 16-20 hours. The scent is cool, green and peppery. It has an antiseptic, antitoxic, anti-viral, digestive and strong anti-inflammatory effect as it is from the family of ginger. It gives a cooling effect instead of warming effect on the inflamed area. Plai essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy and spa products, it blended well with black pepper, rosemary or orange for healing inflammatory or digestive problems. Can be used as an insect-repellent.
