Marula Oil (Wildcrafted)

Marula oil (Sclerocarya birrea) serves as a fantastic carrier oil and is characterizedby a delicate aroma and light yellow color.  Rich in oleic acid, Marula is hydrating and can help increase epidermal smoothness. Our Marula oil is wild-crafted, cold-pressed, and unrefined.

A member of the Anacardiaceae family, the Marula tree is a relative of other well-known trees including the Mango, Cashew, and Pistachio. It is indigenous to Africa and Madagascar where its fruit has been treasured for centuries. Marula fruit, which falls to the ground when ripe and resembles a plum with a large seed inside, is traditionally described as the “food of kings”. A gift of Marula nuts is considered to be a generous statement of friendship. 

Our Marula oil is fairly and sustainably sourced from a women’s co-op organization. This product can be used on its own for massage applications or as an excellent base for essential oils or butter blends.

  • Protects and nourishes the skin
  • Good for oily skin and hair
  • Relieves Dermatitis
  • Relieves Eczema
  • Relieves Psoriasis
  • Helps heal sunburns
  • Heals chapped/irritated skin
  • Anti-oxidant
  • Can be used around the eye area for fine line treatment
  • Antibacterial action - used to treat wounds and burns
  • Free-radical scavenging properties

Marula is a very stable oil: it should last 2 years minimum.  No solvents are used in the extraction process. The oil is filtered at the end and warmed to 50 degrees to remove any impurities. This warming does not change the therapeutic properties of the oil in any way.

The plum sized exotic tasting fruit contains a large hard seed that encase two or more edible kernels, rich in oil.  The kernels are so full of oil, that the oil can be extracted simply by squeezing them.

Similar to Olive Oil, Marula has a typical composition of fatty acids as listed below:

Saturated fatty acids 

  • Myristic  <0.2% 
  • Palmitic  10.0-13.7% 
  • Stearic acid  4.0-8.0% 
  • Arachidic  <1.0% 

Unsaturated fatty acid 

  • Palmitoleic  <0.2% 
  • Oleic  70-80% 
  • Linoleic  6.0-9.0% 
  • Linolenic  <0.7% 
  • Docosenoic  0.1%
  • Iconsenoic 0.4%
  • Icosnoic 0.7%
