Diffusing Seasonal Affective Disorder (Joy in January Project)

by Karen on January 16, 2012

SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) seems to appear with the coming of Fall and eases off as Spring appears, especially in the Northern climates affecting more women than men.   Studies show SAD can be caused by a decrease in sunlight affecting levels of the hormone, Seratonin, responsible in helping us maintain a feeling of well being.  While there are other possible causes, we feel less energetic, depressed and catching more colds and flu as our immune system is depressed.  In turn, weight creeps up and we long for a good nights sleep.  In essence, SAD can affect every area of our life.

During this period of time, we naturally gravitate to uplifting aromas.  Fragrance deeply affects our brains ability to think and feel, to energize us or take us into a more quiet, restful place. Much has been written on this topic and it seems that light, exercise, eating well and surrounding ourselves with uplifting aromas such as essential oils can dramatically help ease the symptoms of SAD.

Elizabeth Jones in her book, Awaken to Healing Fragrance, quotes  a study by T. Komori et al, “Effects of citrus fragrance on immune function and depressive states”. The study shows the antidepressant benefits of the citrus oils plus their boost to the emotional immune system. Elizabeth further states the results support the concept that human depression is based on homeostatic dysregulation and citrus oils improve the homeostatic balance more than antidepressant drugs.  It was concluded that citrus oils were of psychoneuroimmunological benefit for the treatment of emotions and the immune system.

I like to utilize a diffuser as the oils uplift our emotional spirit and clean the air.  If a diffuser isn’t available, put a pan of water on a woodstove or stovetop on low heat and add 10-15 drops of essential oils.

SAD uplifting diffuser blend:

35 drops Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
30 drops Orange (Citrus sinensis)
10 drops Neroli (Citrus aurantium var amara)
15 drops Cardamom CO2 (Elettaria cardamomum)
10 drops Patchouli (Pogostemom cablin)

Blend together in a 5 ml bottle and use as your stock blend.  Add 10-15 drops to a diffuser. Use in your home or office during the day.

  • Bergamot is a valuable oil when dealing with emotional issues and has been used successfully to address depression, anxiety, and tension.  Possessing a bright aroma, Bergamot is a beautiful addition to blends.  Bergamot also helps with insomnia and is restorative and calming.
  • Orange is a bright uplifting oil and is useful to add to any blend when you want a fresh, happy note! Excellent in a diffuser to brighten the room and to disinfect.  Noted as an antidepressant.
  • Neroli is used in blends for people who need strong emotional support. The gentle floral, citrus aroma can be very soothing and calming to the nervous system, especially when used in really small amounts and blended with other calming oils.  Neroli relaxes the nerves and calms and soothes the heart.
  • Cardamom is a wonderful oil for aiding mental concentration (cephalic). Cardamom has a warm, sweet, spicy aroma and is refreshing and invigorating
  • Patchouli helps reduce stress and anxiety and can help to prevent and alleviate depression.

We are offering a free 5 ml bottle of the above blend.  To enter this drawing, post a comment!  Be sure and leave your email address so we can contact you for shipping information.

Winner will be announced January 19, 2012.

I’m such a fan of your blog. Please tell me what diffuser you use, as well. I haven’t found one I like yet. I hope I win. :)

Karen January 16, 2012 at 14:19

We have a couple diffusers that have become our favorites. Here is a link: http://www.aromaticsinternational.com/Diffusers. The Spa Mist is backordered right now. I also love the H2EO diffuser as it works well and has several settings. It does use distilled water whereas the Spa Mist uses tap water.

Sounds wonderful…. putting drops in the pot of water on the woodstove as I write….

Karen Ball January 16, 2012 at 09:36

Yummy! These are some of my favorite oils, Karen. Thank you for blending them together so beautifully. I feel better just reading about them! I’ve used Bergamot very successfully with clients to counteract depression.
Joy in January and all the months that follow!!

This is a rich and powerful blend to calm to relax to restore our emotional system, the one who show us , what are we creating…I’ll give it an A+!!!!

Karen January 16, 2012 at 14:17

Thanks for the A+! So glad you enjoyed the blog.

What a great topic! Here in southwest Michigan, we get very little sunshine during the colder months, and SAD is rampant. I find that getting outside every day, even under a cloudy sky, helps tremendously. I love the blend you created… Bergamot is such a wonderful anti-depressant oil, so bright and uplifting.

Py January 16, 2012 at 11:34

Thank you so much for the recipe! It sounds beautiful and I can’t wait to try it.

AnnMarie January 16, 2012 at 11:56

I love lemon as well. I keep a bottle of organic, lemon scentedhand lotion in the kitchen and use it several times a day. It perks me right up. You can use a pot of water on the stove with some water and oil? I will try that. I don’t have a diffuser. A diffuser and a juicer are on my “must have soon” list…

Karen January 16, 2012 at 14:16

Yes, you can put the essential oils in wate and let it steam away. A diffuser is best as the ones we carry use a cool mist vs. the hot mist.

Hemla January 16, 2012 at 12:27

if someone has a woodstove, you can also place a peel of any citrus fruit right on the stove. it fills the room with a -surprisingly- balsamic creamy scent. lovely.
I love cardamom, thank you for the blend ‘recipe’

Karen January 16, 2012 at 14:15

Putting the peel of the citrus fruit on the stove is a great idea and sound wonderful. Thanks for that tip.

nekosan January 16, 2012 at 13:01

That sounds like an amazing blend.

Lindaloo January 16, 2012 at 13:26

This blend sounds wonderful. I’d love to smell it wafting through my place and lifting my mood on one of our usual very wet winter days. Citrus scents have always been a mood lifter for me. And I love cardamom — including the mood-lifting dark chocolate, coffee and cardamom bar I devoured yesterday :-) .

Heather January 16, 2012 at 13:50

Great info – I can’t wait to try this. Bergamot and Neroli are two of my favorites!

Cheesegan January 16, 2012 at 14:09

I would love to add aromatherapy to my light therapy regiment to combat SAD. Thank you for your generosity and please enter me in your drawing.

Theresa Truran January 16, 2012 at 14:14

I will be trying this! I really miss the sun during the winter…

rosarita January 16, 2012 at 16:14

Thanks so much for hosting this giveaway! It sounds gorgeous. I am fond of citrus scents but my taste leans more toward woods/spice/patchouli, so to see cardamom & patch in a citrus scent sounds lovely. I live in northern IN, apparently not far from Rebecca, above. Lake Michigan does cause us to be under a *permacloud* during the winter months and it can be a difficult time to deal with – very hard to get motivated about anything.

I’m so excited to have found your blog. Thank you Natural perfumers Guild for this draw to introduce me to new perfumers. This blend sounds lovely and the infuser in the photo looks great too. I might have to get one of those. I will keep reading…

Charna January 16, 2012 at 17:33

What a great blog post Karen! Your uplifting diffuser blend sounds lovely–cardamom co2 is one of my favorites. Thanks for helping spread joy.

perfect you should mention just using a pot/pan and heating water on the stove. it’s pretty much how i introduce everyone to immediate/effective aromatherapy! of course, they all seem to drift to the ultrasonic diffuser. however you do it- ambient aroma seems to ‘change the weather’ as it were.

the blend sounds perfect! grounding/opening/encouraging/supporting- everything one needs in the face of depression.

thank you for the informative post and draw!!

Sandi Lundberg January 16, 2012 at 18:54

Karen,
Great blog and the blend sounds wonderful. I am such a fan of diffusing. I have my favorites and they are all set on timers:) Thanks

Ann January 16, 2012 at 19:05

This sounds great especially after returning to the cold northeast late last night. Spent last week in sunny FL at Aromahead Teacher Training!!

Anya McCoy January 16, 2012 at 19:16

Dear Karen:

Thank you for such a wonderful post to kick off the Joy in January three-day event. I knew you would bring a wealth of aromatherapy info to the event. That blend sounds divine! Good luck to all the posters for the win.

Just reading about this blend is uplifting! I’d love to try it

Amy H. January 16, 2012 at 21:30

Love your addition of cardamom to the citrus blend, it’s one of my favorite spices.

Michael S January 16, 2012 at 22:45

Thank you so much for participating in the Joy in January project!

The essential oil blend you shared sounds wonderful, definitely a great aid for coping with SAD. The cardamom sounds like a really unique addition to the citruses.

With much appreciation,
Michael S

“Joy in a Bottle” sounds divine! I love Bergamot as it so sense awakening, one of my faves. If I added another, it would be Mexican Lime that’s always gives me a burst of love! I didn’t know that cardamom was a mental stimulant so I now have new info.
Thanks

Sharri January 17, 2012 at 08:11

This “recipe” will go under my FAVORITES section. I know it without having tried it yet. I am relatively new to aromatherapy and essential oils but I have quickly become a cheerleader for their benefits and uses. My friends already joke about the “voodoo box” I keep in the bathroom full of oils. The great thing about the recipe you just posted is that I actually have all of the oils to go home and make it today! That rarely happens, since I am still building up my ARSENAL! Thank you so much.

DancingTree41 January 17, 2012 at 12:55

Just reading over the ingredients in this recipe lifts my spirits — they are so bright! Looking forward to trying this cheery one out. Thanks for sharing.
