Personal Experience, Research, Possible Actions
On Aromatics International we have 2 different basils.
1. Sweet Basil is excellent for soothing a chest cold with a spasmodic cough. It has an antispasmodic quality, and can stop coughing for several hours after each application to the chest. It is an anti-infectious oil offering nice long term immune support. I also like to rub a cream with Sweet Basil on my neck to get rid of a headache. It can be used on its own or blended with Lavender. It seems to work best if the headache is stress or tension related. It is also a good digestive aid and can be added to a blend for gas or cramping after eating. Basil is commonly used for muscle pains and cramping.
2. Basil ct Eugenol—This basil is high in a component called eugenol that offers a strong anti-microbial effect, being anti-fungal and anti-viral. It is known for its analgesic (pain relieving) effect. This basil is also a powerful anti-inflammatory, and a sedative. It also behaves as an anticoagulant and is not to be used by people with clotting disorders. Eugenol can also be a mucous membrane irritant so this oil should not be diffused or used in an inhaler. This oil is best applied in low concentration to the skin in a skin nourishing carrier oil. Robert Tisserand, in his book Essential Oil Safety, states that oils high in eugenol should be used with caution on those with impaired liver function. Never to be used orally.

Safety Issues
The use of this oil is meant only for the experienced, certified aromatherapist.
Oils high in Phenols considered to be the most irritating components to the skin and mucous membranes and can cause dermatitis and sensitization. If phenols are present in high concentrations in an essential oil, that oil should be used in very low dilutions on the skin (1% in a carrier) and for short periods of time. They are generally not safe for the skin in a bath. This oil should not be diffused or used in an inhaler. Phenol high oils are not used with babies and children.
Robert Tisserand, in his book Essential Oil Safety, states that oils high in eugenol should be used with caution on those with impaired liver function.
Do not use eugenol high oils with people who have clotting disorders, as eugenol is an anticoagulant.
